DIY: Garbage Disposal Not Working

Bad Smell
First try cleaning the rubber splash guard, both the top and underside.
Second, fill the disposal with ice cubes and dish soap (or lemon/orange peels), turn on cold water and run the disposal.

Won’t Turn On
Press the red button at the bottom of the unit, confirm power by plugging something else into the outlet, check the breaker.

Jammed Garbage Disposal

  1. Turn the garbage off by unplugging from outlet.
  2. Check for foreign objects with a flash light and remove with tongs or needle-nose pliers.
  3. There should be a small hole in the shape of a hexagon at the bottom of your disposal. Put in a hex wrench that fits and turn it back and forth a 10-20 times. This turns the blades by hand, which helps to free up whatever is stuck. Slow, steady pressure usually works.
  4. Press the red reset button to reset the motor.
  5. Plug the disposal back into the outlet, run cold water and test the disposal.

If the garbage disposal is still jammed or or won’t turn on, it might be time to give us a call.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much do you charge to install a garbage disposal?
Installing a garbage disposal typically costs between $400 and $1,100 total, with the unit itself ranging from $100 to $600+, and labor adding $250 to $350+. Factors like horsepower, noise, material (stainless steel costs more), and if new wiring or additional plumbing adjustments determine actual costs.
  2. Will you install a garbage disposal I buy myself?
Yes, Liquid Plumbing will gladly install a garbage disposal purchased from Lowe’s, Costco, Home Depot or anywhere else and we guarantee our work for a full year.
  3. How do I know when to replace my garbage disposal?
Signs that you need a new garbage disposal include age of the unit and if there are recurring problems like odd grinding sound, unusual noises, frequent clogs or resets, leaks from the unit, or burning smells.
  4. Can I use Liquid Plumber in a garbage disposal?
We wouldn’t recommend it. Liquid-Plumr, commonly called Liquid Plumber, is harsh and can damage the disposal’s seals and blades, and can corrode pipes especially if used repeatedly. Try running hot water with a little dish soap or using a disposal-safe auger, and if that doesn’t do it, it’s time to call a plumber. If you’re set on using a chemical cleaner, make sure it’s Liquid-Plumr Disposal & Drain Cleaner or another product specifically made for garbage disposals, not a standard drain cleaner.

We provide garbage disposal services throughout Orange County, CA. We’re centrally located in Anaheim, CA and will service all corners of the OC.
