What is a Water Treatment System?

A water treatment system is any system that is designed to improve water quality through steps like filtration, disinfection, conditioning and chemical treatment. However, different types of water treatment systems such water softeners and water filtration systems serve different purposes. Understanding if the goal is to improve your drinking water, reduce the effects of hard water or you’re looking for in a total whole home solution will determine what type of water treatment system is best for you.

Types of Water Treatment Systems

There are many different types of water conditioning systems that improve the quality or behavior of water. From sand filtration to distillation to reverse osmosis, all of these methods are great ways to protect your plumbing and appliances and provide the best drinking water.

Water Softener System: A water softener removes minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, from Orange County’s notorious hard water which causes limescale buildup in piper, faucets, shower heads, water heaters and appliances. Over time this buildup leads to clogged pipes, broken water heaters and appliances that need to be replaced far too early. Typically this is a whole home solution that is installed at the main water line for full home protection.

Water Filtration System: A filtration system purifies drinking water for daily use. It cleans all the water in a home by getting rid of dirt, rust, clay, and other contaminants, as well as chemicals like chlorine, chloramine, bacteria, and pesticides. The end result is that your showers, faucets and appliances will have clean, odor-free, fresh water. If your only goal is pure drinking water, a point-of-use unit, installed at single taps, might be the best solution for you. If your hair or skin is sensitive to chemicals or you prefer drinking water at every faucet, than a whole house system would be best.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration System: This is a type of water filtration system that we highly recommend and is available as both point-of-use unit and whole home system. An RO system removes far more impurities, chemicals and bacteria than a typical system.

Whole Home Treatment System: This system does both by combining water filter and softening so you’ll have cleaner AND softer water.

What is Hard Water?

Hard water is water that is high in dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium which eventually evaporate in hot water and form tiny crystals (limescale) that stick to faucets, pipes and more, leaving behind clogged pipes and soap scum.

Orange County sources their water from three primary sources, the Colorado River, local ground or well water and water from Northern California. All three sources contain high amounts of minerals such as calcium and magnesium but the Colorado River sourced water is particularly high in mineral content.

Hard water can cause a number of problems such as:

  • Clogged pipes due to limescale, which reduces water flow and pressure
  • Corrosion inside appliances like washing machines, water heaters, and dishwashers
  • Damage to skin and hair
  • An increase in soap and detergent usage, as hard water requires more to keep your dishes and laundry clean
